Special Olympics Austria
Special Olympics offers year-round training and competition opportunities in 26 different Olympic sports to over 2.5 million children over the age of 8, teenagers and adults with learning difficulties in 180 countries around the world.
These sports and the rules have been designed so that as many people as possible with learning difficulties can take part and, allowing for their disability, can compete against people of approximately the same ability.
Special Olympics International was founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968 and is based in Washington.
From these global headquarters, Special Olympics International coordinates the national organisations.
Special Olympics firmly believes that, given the right encouragement, people with learning difficulties can experience and benefit from the joy of individual and team sports. Special Olympics also believes that regular training makes an important contribution to the athletes' development. Special Olympics has no doubt that taking part in training and sporting competitions can provide physical, psychological and social benefits to people with disabilities.
The Special Olympics spirit – based on ability, courage, participation and joy – stands for universal values which know no boundaries in terms of state, nationality, political view, gender, age, race or religion.
The aim of Special Olympics is to help everyone with learning difficulties to be accepted and respected as fully integrated members of society. Through its sponsorship, the Stanglwirt is publicly stating its desire to increase understanding and acceptance of people with disabilities in society.
